Benefits of Terrazzo Tiles

Terrazzo floors bring a touch of classical antiquity into contemporary spaces. Terrazzo tiles are made by embedding marble chips, natural stone, quartz, granite, or other materials into a cement binder. Then, the slab is ground and polished to a smooth sheen. Both the embedded chips and binding cement can be coloured to achieve whatever aesthetic pleases you.

  • Cost-effective
  • Variety of choices
  • Customisable
  • Highly durable
  • Easy to maintain
  • Exquisite texture

While terrazzo tiles are incredibly durable, they are 50% lighter than other tiling materials. This makes them ideal for multi-story office buildings where minimising weight is important. Furthermore, as they’re water-proof once sealed, they’re a popular choice for commercial kitchens, bathrooms, and outdoor areas.

With so many unique styles and applications available, terrazzo flooring is a popular choice amongst architects looking to make their projects stand out.

Visually customisable

The chips suspended on your terrazzo tiles are made from your choice of colourful and textured materials so that you can tailor the look to compliment your space and existing design elements.

Highly durable

Properly installed by Policrete’s concrete experts, you can expect your poured terrazzo or terrazzo tiles to last for years to come.

Easy to maintain

The smooth and sealed surface of your terrazzo flooring can be easily cleaned and remains resistant to normal household traffic.

Eternally stylish

Though popularised by 18th century Italians, terrazzo-look tiles also appear in ancient Egypt. Terrazzo simply doesn’t go out of style.

Eco friendly

Using recycled materials to create our terrazzo chips reduces the amount of waste we produce and minimises our environmental footprint.

Types of Terrazzo Flooring

Natural terrazzo

For those who want the real thing, we create real terrazzo by suspending colourful shards in our cement mix. We make a distinction between this and faux terrazzo, where a terrazzo-like pattern is printed onto an existing surface, like a porcelain tile. While porcelain tiles have their value, we’re still big believers in true natural terrazzo.

Epoxy-based terrazzo

Some spaces need a more durable or colourful flooring solution than natural terrazzo can offer. In such contexts, we can suspend terrazzo shards in epoxy resin, which can then be poured into the space for a perfectly seamless finish. Epoxy-based terrazzo is extraordinarily durable and can still give you the classic terrazzo aesthetic you’re after.

Terrazzo Flooring Costs

Installing terrazzo floors is a labour, material and time-intensive process. Therefore, you can expect the terrazzo flooring cost to be higher than most other concrete services and finishes.

One of the key factors in determining installation costs is the type of terrazzo you want. For example, pouring fresh terrazzo mix can cost over $100 per square metre, while the terrazzo tile cost may be under $50 per square metre. This is because poured terrazzo needs significantly more preparation.

Terrazzo Floors Are Allergen and Bacteria Resistant

Once we’ve installed your new terrazzo flooring, we can seal it with a range of attractive yet practical finishes. These finishes will make your terrazzo entirely non-porous, making it resistant to bacterial growth. Now, you can bring a little Italian antiquity into your home while also protecting immunocompromised staff and loved ones from allergens.

Terrazzo also pairs excellently with our hydronic heating systems. One of terrazzo’s many qualities is its strong ability to retain heat. Installed over a hydronic slab, terrazzo will evenly and consistently disperse heat around your living spaces.

Benefits

  • Non-porous and hygienic
  • Anti-slip
  • Antimicrobial
  • Environmentally friendly
  • Low maintenance

Frequently asked questions

Are terrazzo tiles affordable?

Definitely, terrazzo tiles are one of the most cost-effective flooring options available. As they use an aggregate mixed in with a concrete blend, it’s much more affordable than cutting a single piece of expensive stone, such as marble. Furthermore, terrazzo tiles weigh less than alternative flooring options, making them quicker and easier to install—further reducing costs.

Is terrazzo flooring customisable?

Yes. This is a key feature of terrazzo flooring and why it is so popular among leading architects. You can select from a range of colours, thicknesses, and aggregates. The range of available aggregates includes:

  • Marble
  • Quartz
  • Glass
  • Granite

What exactly is terrazzo flooring?

Terrazzo is a composite material. You can get terrazzo tiles, have them precast, or be poured in place by our expert team. Terrazzo flooring uses an aggregate like marble, granite, or quartz and mixes it with a cement binder. It creates a smooth, robust, stylish, and long-lasting floor.

While terrazzo flooring can be traced back to ancient Egypt, it gained prominence in Italy in the 15th century. Initially, it was used as flooring for terraces in Italy’s grandest estates and palaces. As you may have guessed, ‘terrazzo’ is Italian for ‘terrace’.
