Screed concrete: levelling the playing field

Screeding concrete is the process of striking off excess concrete to allow a new slab to achieve the desired level and grade. Both straightedges and power screeds are used in the process, depending on what’s needed for the job.

The team at Policrete is meticulous when it comes to screeding concrete. It’s the final, imperative step before finishing the concrete flooring to spec. Screeding is necessary when a brand new slab is poured. It can also be added to increase the visual appeal of an existing concrete slab.

Frequently asked questions

Why is concrete screeding so important?

Concrete screeding is important for a number of reasons:

  • To improve appearance: Existing concrete slabs may have damage, stains, roughness or poor colouring. Applying a screed layer will cover all of these inconsistencies.
  • To provide an even base: Other flooring and finishes — like linoleum, vinyl, parquet, or tiling — require an even base to look and feel their best underfoot.

What types of screed are available?

There are five main types of screed finishes available to you, each with their own benefits and application:

  • Cement-based screed: Sand and cement are combined at a ratio of 3 to 1.
  • Mastic asphalt screed: A bitumen, sand, and stone dust mixture is heated to a high temperature and poured.
  • Synthetic resin screed: Creates a water-resistant seal across concrete flooring.
  • Calcium sulphate screed: This gypsum-based conglomerate is preferred to cement screed across large areas.
  • Magnesite screed: This is mainly found in older buildings (pre-WWII), and uses wood as chips.

How much does concrete screeding cost?

Costs vary based on a range of factors, including:

  • Type of screeding
  • Surface area
  • Job site challenges

Is concrete screeding the same for all projects?

No; every project is different. Different processes are used to facilitate the laying of a range of different materials, including:

  • Epoxy finishes
  • Laminate flooring
  • Ceramic tiles
  • Underfloor heating
